5 reasons you should buy Handmade jewelry and How to style it.

Continuing with my initiative: #MadeinIndia as a part of doing a little something towards adapting ethical & conscious ways of living life and indulging myself in taking better decisions towards a better future. Honestly, from the day I started researching about sustainable lifestyle and ways to adopt it in daily life, it has not been an easy journey. Taking conscious decisions in terms of fashion is not a day’s work, or not a blog post that explains everything in words but is a lifestyle change, more like a revolution! You can imagine how hard it is, but at the same time it’s the future, so better get started right away!

Sustainable or Ethical, what is that?

In simple terms, “sustainable” and “ethical” means appreciating and respecting what has been made by local hands, with locally available materials and craftsmanship and paying a fair price for their hard work, providing them with better opportunities and livelihood in comparison to factory produced goods made up of cheap material and poor atmospheric conditions, less wages and handful of environmental effects. Easy much?

If you search the meaning of “Ethical” on google, you will come across meanings such as :

  • Morally good or correct.
  • Avoiding activities or organizations that do harm to people or the environment.

We are living in a time where we are surrounded by nothing but all mass produced goods including furniture, clothing and jewelry that changes trends every week, in short more quantity than quality, unless we really put effort in picking up each and every piece by ourselves, read the labels, know the brand and last but not the least, have pocket full of roses? no “money”!! because it ain’t cheap at all 🙂 This is when “doing a little something” comes into play, because clearly we cannot do a lot here.

Millions of people have same colored phones, same type of lifestyle, they wear same type of clothes, probably whatever they can get at a cheaper price from any nearby store, anything that looks trendy and good to their eyes. A handmade piece on the other hand, is handcrafted by ethical ways and eco-friendly material, and is a fair product made by people. It gives buyer’s which is “us” an opportunity to know who made the product and what goes inside it, the kind of craftsmanship and under what atmospheric conditions the product was made, along with its environmental affects. This is probably the only and the most important reason to opt for products that are ethically produced but since we are on it, i will share some more with you, so you at the end you are fully satisfied and inspired 🙂

5 reasons to buy Handmade jewelry

  1. Handmade jewelry is handcrafted with love 🙂 No seriously! A lot of thought is put into designing every piece along with love and care. When you buy handmade, you create a direct relationship with the artist or designer of the product.

When you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance.

2. Handmade jewelry is unique and have an individualistic quality of their own.  It is a symbol of luxury and a piece of your personality. Each piece is exclusive and gives you a chance to choose what suits you the best, basically an opportunity to get it modified according to your taste or choice. Handmade jewelry is always a conversation piece.

3. With handmade products, one is always aware of what goes inside them, who made it, under what physical conditions and if it is a fair trade so you don’t have to worry about child labor or manufacturers who have to make your piece of jewelry without being paid properly and have to work in poor circumstances. The small business preserves its ethics by maintaining a transparent relationship between the buyer, the seller and the manufacturer. This might not sound very interesting as of now, but once you start your journey towards a conscious lifestyle, knowing who made your clothes and that they were paid a fair price will make you feel great! Don’t we all want to get paid a fair price for all the hard work we do? I know i would!

4. Quality over quantity! Well we all have heard this phrase zillions of times and trust me, for me it never really made sense to me until now when we moved to a new place and i couldn’t believe i had so much unnecessary stuff that was lying there like a baggage with zero emotions involved. I guess, we all have done that mistake when we want to follow every new fashion trend and just click “Add to cart” blindly without having any serious thoughts about its worth or quality. I know i have done that, and i know you have too!

But if you think wisely, all the money you put forward goes into the trader’s profit and what you get in return is a low quality piece, probably that isn’t trendy anymore by the time you actually take it out to wear it! Is it worth it, really? With handmade products, there’s no wait time and there’s no trend. It is the quality that counts and the emotions attached. Handmade is a trend in itself, a revolution that is expanding its wings slowly.

5. Buying handmade is a tremendous boost to small businesses & to the economy as whole. Not only they have positive environmental affects but are a future of our economy.

style tips for handmade fabric jewelry

Here i am introducing 2 small businesses that i came across very recently, merely because of their very unique contemporary designs, handcrafted with love and #madeinIndia.

Another aspect of sustainability is really using “what is available” or locally produced. Trupti Gajjar is one such small scale jewelry designer who decided to follow her creative side by starting a jewelry line looking around for available resources and found a way to mould it into art that can be worn .

She uses an acetate material used for making spectacle frame for making the pendants, found at a nearby local factory, along with fabric and beads to complete her designs. Each & every piece is designed by herself personally and can be modified according to your style.

The necklace i am wearing is a hybrid design made up of fabric bangles & beads (another way of using an old bangle into a neckpiece), absolutely a uniques piece of art handmade with love.

Purvi is not only a jewelry label, but is also known for its magical powers to convert simple fabrics into “Art you can wear. It also has a clothing line that uses handmade cotton and up-cycled fabrics. Each piece is designed by Purvi herself with a personal touch and the rawness of handmade fabric. The designs are very much culturally inspired and that’s one of the reasons what caught my attention.

She takes design inspiration from various different cultures such as embroidery work from Gujarat, Bandhej from Rajasthan, phulkari from Punjab, mixing them together to evolve a contemporary design much rooted in our very own culture.

The earrings I am showcasing are made up of fabric cushioned with embroidery over it and fabric tassels, unique in color & texture and purely handmade.

I will be talking more about this Label in my next post showcasing their clothing line, simply a piece of Art. Stay tuned!
